\"[copertina]\" Ogni tanto mi capita di prendere un vecchio libro usato di giochi matematici, tipicamente proveniente da una biblioteca americana che se ne vuole disfare. Diciamo che \u00e8 una scommessa: qualche volta il risultato \u00e8 interessante, molte volte no. Questa (Philip Heafford, The Math Entertainer<\/em><\/a> : Teasers, Ticklers, Twisters, Traps & Tricks; Vintage Books 1983 [1959], pag. 176, ISBN 9780394713748) \u00e8 una delle “volte no”.
\nL’edizione originale del libro \u00e8 del 1959, quindi nell’anno 3 d.G. (dopo che Martin Gardner inizi\u00f2 a tenere la rubrica di giochi matematici sullo Scientific American). Non potevo aspettarmi molto, insomma; per\u00f2 il risultato \u00e8 ancora inferiore a quanto pensassi. Heafford scrive esplicitamente nella prefazione che lo scopo del libro \u00e8 didattico: solo che non credo proprio che i 50 “quiz” (un quiz \u00e8 composto da varie domande) presenti facciano venire voglia a uno studente di imparare matematica (e storia della matematica). \u00c8 anche vero che molti problemi sono legati a lingua e cultura inglese, come le definizioni che contengono al loro interno l’anagramma del nome di un matematico, e quindi sono ostiche per chi non \u00e8 un madrelingua; per\u00f2 comunque non lo consiglierei a nessuno…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
