\"[copertina]\" Clifford Pickover lavora(va?) a Yorktown Heights, il mitico centro di ricerca dell’IBM. Come secondo lavoro, si \u00e8 sempre dilettato di matematica ricreativa. In questo libro (Clifford Pickover, La magia dei numeri<\/em><\/a> [Wonders of Numbers, Adventures in Mathematics, Mind and Meaning], RBA Italia – Sfide Matematiche 4 – 2008 [2001], pag. 350, € 9.99, trad. Angela Iorio e Rossella Pederzoli) troviamo il suo alter ego, il dottor Francis O. Googol (no, non \u00e8 un gioco di parole su Google: al limite \u00e8 Google che prende il nome dal googol) troviamo vari problemi e fatti matematici. Alcuni dei problemi, come la terza sezione sulle Delizie Digitali Diabolicamente Difficili, sono interessanti soprattutto per chi \u00e8 interessato a programmare un computer e vedere cosa riesce a tirarci fuori… anzi per un professore di informatica che voglia far capire ai propri studenti che scrivere un algoritmo decentemente veloce non \u00e8 immediato. Di per s\u00e9 dovrebbe anche essere possibile scaricare codice gi\u00e0 pronto, ma il sito http:\/\/www.oup-usa.org\/sc\/0195133420\/ non era raggiungibile mentre scrivo queste note. La sezione sulle liste di matematici e numeri \u00e8 anche interessante, soprattutto per chi non \u00e8 affatto a conoscenza della materia. In definitiva, per\u00f2, non \u00e8 poi un libro cos\u00ec interessante: inoltre – ma mi chiedo se sia proprio la sfortuna di Pickover – la traduzione lascia in vari punti a desiderare e ci sono numerosi refusi, alcuni che rendono anche impossibile capire il gioco.
