\nIl sottotitolo del libro (Rob Eastaway e Jeremy Wyndham, How long is a piece of string?<\/em><\/a> Robson Book 2002, pag. 182, Lst 6.99, ISBN 1-86105-625-7), vale a dire More hidden mathematics of everyday life<\/em>, fa subito capire che gli autori ne avevano scritto gi\u00e0 uno; per la cronaca il titolo dell’altro testo \u00e8 “Why Do Buses Come in Threes?”, che \u00e8 una delle domande che ci siamo fatti in tanti. I vari capitoli del libro trattano di temi della vita di tutti i giorni, dando un’idea della matematica sottostante; abbiamo cos\u00ec ad esempio una spiegazione algoritmica del perch\u00e9 gli ascensori viaggino sempre nella direzione opposta alla nostra, o di come si stabilisce il funzionamento di un tassametro, o ancora di come accorgersi delle balle nascoste nei numeri tirati fuori dai politici. Il tutto senza utilizzare alcun tipo di matematica avanzata, e con uno stile molto tranquillo che rende la lettura molto piacevole. Insomma, uno di quei testi che purtroppo non vengono mai tradotti in italiano, ed \u00e8 davvero un peccato.
