In questo caso l’improbo compito \u00e8 andato a Timothy Gowers, che non \u00e8 esattamente l’ultimo arrivato avendo vinto una Fields Medal – ed \u00e8 nato il mio stesso anno! sono quelle cose che ti fanno sentire a disagio – che ha scritto questo libretto (Timothy Gowers, A very short introduction to mathematics<\/em><\/a>, Oxford University Press – Very Short Introductions 2002, p.144, $9.95, ISBN 0192853619) che fa parte di una collana di “introduzioni a tante cose diverse”. Nonostante i caratteri siano minuscoli, non \u00e8 che ci possa stare molto materiale, e quindi i temi trattati sono quelli soliti di divulgazione della matematica, evitando espressamente frattali e teoria del caos “perch\u00e9 ne parlano gi\u00e0 in tanti, e non danno un grande aiuto a comprendere la matematica odierna”: ottima scelta a mio giudizio. In compenso, mi \u00e8 piaciuto molto il modo in cui Gowers ha esposto il materiale: il concetto di base si pu\u00f2 sintetizzare dicendo “le regole matematiche e persino gli enti non hanno nulla di intrinsecamente vero, ma vengono scelti perch\u00e9 risultano pi\u00f9 comodi”. Uno dei rari esempi moderni di matematico non platoniano, direi. Non ci avevo mai pensato, dato che il mio approccio alla matematica \u00e8 generalmente formalista, ma forse ha ragione: uno dei motivi per cui tanta gente afferma di odiare la matematica \u00e8 perch\u00e9 non sono mai riusciti a capire perch\u00e9<\/em> le cose si facciano in un certo modo, immaginando magari chiss\u00e0 quale complotto dei matematici. Sfatare questo mito potrebbe essere pertanto utile, anche se rester\u00e0 sempre l’altro enorme scoglio: la matematica \u00e8 un’unica costruzione che continua a crescere sui risultati precedenti, e se non se ne comprende una parte non \u00e8 possibile sperare di capire le nozioni successive.
